Bye-bye

バイバイ is the popular farewell greeting in Japan, by repeating the English word “Bye” twice.

You can say “bye-bye” to your close friends and family members.

You do not use it for your elders.

Example sentences

A:I’ll go back home. Bye!
B:Bye, see you tomorrow.

A:I had a great time today. Bye.
B:Bye. Let’s hang out again!

またね Matane

またね means “see you again.” and “see you soon.”

We use またね in the same way as “バイバイ”

Example sentences

A:Thanks for the ride. See you soon.
B:You’re welcome. I look forward to seeing you again.

A:It was pretty fun today, thanks.
B:Me too. See you!
A:Alright, see you.

Jaane

I would say thatじゃあね” and “またね” have the same nuance.

じゃあね is also used only between close friends.

Example sentence

I’m so glad we met after such a long time! Bye.

A:I’ll see you in Osaka next time!
B:Sure.
A:See you!
B:Alright, see you.

Sayounara

さようなら is used to say goodbye to your elders or a less familiar acquaintance.

You do not want to use it with close acquaintances because さようなら sounds like a cold, goodbye forever.

However, when students say goodbye to their teachers, they use

A slightly frank version of “さようなら” is “さよなら.”

Example sentences

A:Thank you for inviting me today.
B:It’s my pleasure. See you.

A:I wish you happiness with your new girlfriend. Goodbye.
B:I’ll never see you again. Bye.

A:Goodbye, teacher.
B:See you tomorrow.

Shitsureishimasu

失礼(しつれい)します is often used in business situations.

When prefixed with “お先(さき)に” meaning “one step ahead,” it becomes a standard phrase when leaving the office after finishing work.

You say 「お先(さき)に失礼(しつれい)します」 when leaving the office before others.

Example sentences

A:I have finished my work, see you tommorow.
B:Thanks for your hard work. (See you.)

A:Thank you for joining our zoom meeting today. That’s all for today. Thank you.
