How to say “hang out” in Japanese?

遊(あそ)ぶ Asobu

Simple! “Hang out” in Japanese is (あそ).

You might think that (あそ) means “play,” and it’s used only for children’s games.

But actually, it also means “hang out,” and you can use it no matter how old you are!!

Here are some example sentences to understand the word better.

Example sentences

A:どこに行(い)くの?
B:友達(ともだち)と遊(あそ)んでくるよ。
A:夕飯(ゆうはん)までには帰(かえ)るのよ〜。
B:分(わ)かってるよ、お母(かあ)さん。

A:Where are you going?
B:I’ll hang out with my firends.
A:Come back home by dinner time.
B:I know, mom.

A:昔(むかし)の友達(ともだち)と久(ひさ)しぶりに遊(あそ)んだよ。

遊(あそ)びに誘(さそ)う  ask someone to hang out

When you say, “I ask someone to hang out,” you can say “遊(あそ)びに誘(さそ)う.”

A:Masaを遊(あそ)びに誘(さそ)おうよ!
B:いいね!

A:We gotta ask Masa to hang out!
B:That’s great!

A:彼女(かのじょ)を遊(あそ)びに誘(さそ)いたいんだけど、どこに行(い)こうかな。
